I have been an emergency management professional for nearly 20 years, first with the American Red Cross and now as a consultant working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). I’ve created mitigation and evacuation plans for areas all over the country, and I am a national expert on the system that emergency management professionals use to analyze the impact of disasters. But it was the combination of being a mom and witnessing the suffering during Hurricane Katrina that made me want to do more to help people get prepared and stay safe during an emergency.

Giving Preparedness is the result of over twenty years of emergency management experience. Working with the American Red Cross and then as a consultant to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and with state and local governments has given me an understanding of what capabilities governments have to assist their citizens before, during and after a disaster. Watching the media coverage of Hurricane Katrina left me with a tremendous desire to help individual citizens prepare for disasters. That feeling combined with my own frustration of adding to an already lengthy to-do list the tasks of preparing my family and friends for disasters has led me to form Giving Preparedness.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in September 2009, "First take the most basic steps: get an emergency kit, make a family reunification plan, and get better informed."
